How Lunotype works

A clearer view of why and how you respond

Behavior alone can hide as much as it shows. Lunotype is an original self-reflection system that reads two things at once — what motivates you, and how you think — then hands the result back to you to confirm.

Motive, not just method

Two people can act exactly the same way for very different reasons. Lunotype is built to separate the motive from the method — because the behavior on its own can’t tell them apart.

Same actionPlans carefully
Person A

May be seeking dependable security — planning is how they hold uncertainty at bay.

Person B

May be protecting competence and independence — planning is how they stay in control of the outcome.

Two people, one behavior — different reasons. Lunotype is built to separate the motive (the why) from the method (the how), because the action on its own can’t tell them apart.

Two independent layers

Your Lunotype is read on two separate layers: a nine-pattern motivation model, and four continuous thinking-style dimensions. Each is scored on its own — there is no four-letter code.

L1

Motivation

· nine patterns
  • Refiner
  • Ally
  • Driver
  • Originator
  • Scholar
  • Steward
  • Voyager
  • Vanguard
  • Anchor

Nine recurring reasons people pursue, protect, avoid, and notice what they do.

L2

Thinking style

· four dimensions
  • InwardOutward
  • ConcretePattern-focused
  • AnalyticalValues-led
  • StructuredAdaptive

Each dimension is scored on its own scale — there is no four-letter code.

The two layers are measured independently and then read together as your personal synthesis: the same motivation can show up through very different thinking styles.

Honest bands, not false precision

We show your thinking style as qualitative bands rather than invented percentages, because a questionnaire cannot honestly claim that kind of accuracy.

InwardOutward
Your readModerately Inward— never “72% Inward.”
A questionnaire can’t honestly claim decimal-point accuracy, so Lunotype reports a qualitative band. The same answers always land in the same band.

Transparent, deterministic scoring

Every item carries small, fixed weights toward one or more patterns, or toward a single thinking dimension. Your answers are tallied, normalized, and ranked — the same answers always produce the same result.

  1. 01Your answersEach item you respond to on the assessment.
  2. 02Fixed item weightsEvery item carries small, fixed weights toward patterns or one dimension.
  3. 03Normalize each scaleScores are put on a common scale so no single item dominates.
  4. 04Rank closest patternsYour motivation patterns are ordered by fit.
  5. 05Qualitative bandsThinking style is reported as honest bands, not percentages.
The pipeline is deterministic: the same answers always produce the same result. Some items are reverse-worded to blunt agreement bias.

You confirm your own result

Rather than declaring a type at you, Lunotype shows your closest candidates and lets you confirm the one that actually fits. You own the saved result and can revise or delete it anytime.

  1. 1

    See your closest candidates

Lunotype surfaces the motivation patterns that fit best — not a single verdict.

  2. 2

    Confirm the one that fits

You choose the pattern that rings true, or keep exploring the others.

  3. 3

    Read the confidence signal

How cleanly your top pattern separated, and how consistently you answered.

  4. 4

    Own it — revise anytime

The saved result is yours. Revise or delete it whenever you like.

Lunotype shows you the read and lets you decide. Nothing is filed away until you confirm it, and you stay in control of the saved result.

What Lunotype is not

Lunotype is a self-reflection and entertainment tool. To keep that honest, here is what it is deliberately not:

  • Not an official Enneagram or Myers-Briggs assessment.
  • Not clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, or scientifically validated.
  • Not a hiring, screening, or personnel-selection tool.
  • Not calculated from astrology, birth dates, or star signs.

All questions, pattern names, descriptions, scoring, and synthesis were written originally for Lunotype.
